Dr. Iris Mauss, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Institute for Social Personality Research (ISPR) at the University of California, Berkeley, will present a free webinar, “The Role of Emotion Regulation in Human Resilience” as part of the Alan Hu Foundation Mental Health Lecture Series. Co-Founder and President, Ms. Xiaofang Chen, is grateful for the support of Three Valleys Community Foundation to offer Dr. Mauss’s presentation free to the public, including simultaneous Chinese and Spanish interpretation, and Mental Health Association for Chinese Communities for partial funding of Chinese interpretation.

Dr. Mauss will address how adverse life events and circumstances commonly diminish psychological health and well-being, sometimes leading to immense pain and suffering. People’s ability to manage (“regulate”) negative emotions is thought to be a pivotal resilience factor. She will present research on one particularly promising type of emotion regulation: reappraisal (reframing how one thinks about emotional events), as well as a complementary strategy: Emotional acceptance (accepting one’s emotions without judgment).

The free webinar will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, via Zoom. It will include 15 minutes for questions and answers following Dr. Mauss’s presentation. Please RSVP by September 10 at: alanhufoundation.org/ to receive the Zoom meeting link. Participants may join beginning at 6:15 pm.

The Alan Hu Foundation was created by Xiaofang Chen and Chih-Ching Hu in memory of their son, Alan. He passed away due to mental disorders in 2018 at the age of 15. Their mission is to promote mental health, raise awareness and remove stigma surrounding psychiatric disorders, and to support fundamental research for cures.
