Chabot Sports Report: Glads Basketball, Baseball Turn Up The Volume

Sizzling men's basketball team has biggie at home vs. CCSF Wednesday; Diamond Glads take two over Santa Rosa to open the season

Chabot sports report (Jan. 30 edition)

The Chabot men’s basketball team stayed hot on the heels of State No. 2 City College of San Francisco in the Coast-North Conference with back-to-back wins last week to up their winning streak to seven.

The second-place Glads (14-8, 7-1) have a showdown with first-place CCSF (20-2, 8-0) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Hayward. Buckle up!

The Glads, ranked No. 22 in the State in the Jan. 16 CCCMBCA poll, sizzled on offense in a win over Skyline, 104-87, their first time over the century mark this season, and in a tight triumph over Foothill, 93-87.

The CCSF Rams and beat Chabot 101-81 in the first half of conference play. CCSF is coming off a win over Las Positas 97-84.

For Chabot, Jaiden Rivera had a team-high 20 points against Foothill; Diggy Winbush added 15 points and seven assists; Zaydin Walker had 13 points; David Hector added 12 points and 12 rebounds; and David Ogunleye matched Hector’s double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.

Against Skyline, Rivera led the way with 19 points, and Hector had a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards. Winbush and Makaio Mims had 15 points apiece. Ogunleye (13 points) and Zach Broadous (10 points) also reached double figures.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Glads (8-15, 3-2) had a tough loss against Skyline (14-10, 5-1), 74-73, in a tight Coast-North Conference battle. Red-hot Emilia Dougherty led the Glads with 18 points and five threes.

Chabot resides in third place with a big game at home against pace-setter CCSF (19-4, 6-0) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. CCSF is ranked No. 9 in the state in the Jan. 23 CCCSIA poll.

BASEBALL

The Chabot baseball team is off to a strong start in the new season.

The Gladiators went on the road and beat Santa Rosa Junior College 8-0 on Friday, Jan. 27 as Antoine Valerio and Carson Glavich shined on the mound, combining on 11 strikeouts and no runs allowed.

On offense, Alonzo Guijarro was 1 for 4 with a home run and four RBI; Casey Cummings was 3 for 5 with a double; and Brian Duroff was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

Chabot (2-0) followed in their home opener with a rousing 12-7 triumph over Santa Rosa on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Glads pounded out 15 hits and four home runs.

Head coach Will Tavis described both victories over an opponent that finished the 2022 season ranked 16th in the state as “Great team wins.”

In the home opener, Cummings kept raking with two hits in four at-bats, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Guijarro was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI. JT Noble was 2 for 5, Colin Fukuki was 2 for 5 with two doubles, and Nick Walsh homered and had three RBI. A trio of pitchers were solid: Ole Iversen, San Heyman and Bryce Clark.

This week, Chabot travels to Laney on Tuesday and then hosts Los Medanos at 2 p.m. on Thursday and Laney at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

The Glads opened the season with a pair of losses to Redwoods, 8-4 and 9-6, in a doubleheader on Friday. Leadoff Aliya Lubrin had two hits and an RBI in the 8-4 loss, and Ka’Naya Newton, the center fielder, had two RBI.

In the 9-6 defeat, Chabot hammered out 10 hits, paced by Cherlyn Sandal’s going 3 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBI and a run scored. Yuba Aguayo was solid with two hits and two runs scored.

The Glads host Diablo Valley in a doubleheader on Tuesday, beginning on Tuesday.
