"The Crown of Fire": The Writers' Spotlight
Pleasanton student-author, Bella Wilson, shares an original book about a kingdom of magic. Read an excerpt here!

Chapter IV from The Crown of Fire by Bella Wilson:
The academy courtyard was dark and eerie at night. The only sound that could be heard was the light breeze that swept through the tree’s leaves, whispering softly.
Scarlett walked gingerly towards the fountain in the center of the courtyard. It trickled crystal clear water, flowing with beauty. Scarlett crouched down to the side of the fountain, where, to her satisfaction, was a faint carving of an angel.
She had learned about these carvings in class. They were called ailyanight, ancient carvings that were used as gateways to protect the seven elemental objects.
The seven elemental objects were crafted by Osscar Raven many years ago, as a way to channel stronger elemental magic. His assistant, Ophelia Phoenix, turned to the dark side after they were made, and has not been seen ever since. That is why, for the safety of the kingdom, the objects were hidden away, never to be used again.
And now, a dark force was coming after them...
Scarlett gently clicked the angel’s crown, and the fountain shifted to the side, revealing a dark passage down a spiral stairway. It was covered in thick layers of ivy that climbed the dull gray cobblestone walls.
Scarlett carefully stepped onto the first stair. The old, rotting wood let out a groan from beneath her feet. She cautiously continued down the rest of the stairs, careful not to fall.
The stairway finally gave away to a serene underground palace with white marble columns and a vast turquoise lake. In the middle of the lake sat a small island, made from hard, jagged rocks. And on that island stood someone Scarlett knew- someone she thought she had lost a long time ago.
