Deputy Arrested In Pleasanton, Accused Of Smuggling Meth: Report

The arrest was the culmination of a two-month investigation after a tip that a deputy was helping smuggle meth into a Santa Clara Co. jail.

PLEASANTON, CA — A Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputy was arrested in Pleasanton Tuesday after detectives determined she was helping to smuggle drugs into the Elmwood Correctional Facility on behalf of inmates, Bay Area News Group reported.

Mayra Rios, 35, of Antioch was booked into the Santa Clara County Mail Jail in lieu of $1 million bail, the sheriff's office said in a news release. Detectives sought a higher bail amount because of her access to funds, potential flight risk and former position of authority.

Her arrest followed a two-month investigation, the sheriff's office said. Detectives were first tipped off in April.

Rios has been placed on administrative leave, Bay Area News Group reported.

She remains in Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail to avoid the conflict of interest that would arise if she were housed in the jail she once worked in, said Alameda County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Ray Kelly in an email.
