Dublin's Pearson Brings Gael-Force Energy To BAWS
Bay Area World Series showcase at Islanders Field attracts high school stars from throughout Northern California, including the EBAL.
Dublin High senior-to-be Carston Pearson brought his trademark gung-ho playing style to the Bay Area World Series at Islanders Field in the River Islands community.
Rising stars from throughout Northern California participated in the June 10-12 BAWS showcase — a magnet for college recruiters since its inception in 2004.
Pearson was one of 40 All Stars selected from the showcase. He turned some heads along the way.
“Carston Pearson has been one of our favorites all week,” BAWS director Blaine Clemmens tweeted. “Has range in the outfield and love his intent on the offensive side of the ball. Get in to see this one.”
Dublin High baseball coach Ed Dean would expect nothing less from Pearson, a coach’s dream player who leads by example.
“He’s a great young guy, and the thing about him is he’s one of the hardest workers there is,” Dean said. “He always is processing things, always wants to get better. He just consumes the game. When everyone else is out talking, he’s taking swings. … His motor is never ending. He’s got the right attitude to play college baseball.”
Catcher Danny McInnis (De La Salle, Class of 2023) was selected as 2022 BAWS Most Outstanding Player, and Jacob Moreda (Cardinal Newman, Class of 2024) was tabbed Most Outstanding Pitcher (See the complete All-Star team below).
Pearson, a left-handed hitter, competed for Team East Bay as six assigned teams of teenage players participated in BAWS games and showcase workouts. Prep Baseball Report California was once again scouting and gathering data and stats.
“I had a pretty good team,” Pearson said. "We were fired up all weekend. … A lot of us knew each other, so we already had good team chemistry. … Very good field, good energy.”
More than 39 former BAWS participants have reached the big leagues these past 18 years, among them Marcus Semien, Joc Pederson, Mitch Haniger, and Stephen Piscotty; and hundreds of BAWS players have moved on to Division I programs, according to bayareaworldseries.com.
A hot spot on the recruiting trail, Islanders Field also hosted the prestigious Major League Baseball Area Code Tryouts on June 13-15, hosted by the Oakland A’s; and was a host site for CIF Sac-Joaquin Section divisional championship games along with Sacramento City College in the spring. BAWS was the first major baseball showcase to come to Islanders Field in 2019.
“A beautiful spot,” Dean said of Islanders Field. “They take good care of that place.”
Islanders Field Director Don Johns told BAWS participants that their dedication to the game over the summer would help them land with college programs.
Clemmens, Johns says, does a "great job" of getting coaches and players out for the BAWS, and also gets players PBR Profiles in order to be seen by recruiters online.
Pearson, at 6-foot and 180 pounds, stands out on the diamond with his skill and hustle, always trying to be the first one in and out of the dugout. He sharpens his skills playing for the Headfirst Academy Bercovich team over the summer.
“I would consider myself a pretty hard worker. I don’t like to lose,” he says. "I like winning and I like being the best version of myself."
Pearson and the Dublin High team opened some eyes advancing to the North Coast Section Division I playoffs last season as the 15th seed before falling to No. 2 seed Clayton Valley Charter just 5-3.
He had a team-high .380 batting average and .510 on-base percentage and was picked to the All-East Bay Athletic League second team.
“He’s kind of the perfect guy. If we had nine of those guys, your life would be pretty good,” Dean said of Pearson.
MLB AREA CODE BASEBALL: Top players from the Islanders Field MLB Area Code Tryouts were selected to compete in a five-day showcase among eight regional teams at the University of San Diego, Aug. 6-11. The MLB Area Code games will feature the country’s top 220+ players for the classes of 2023 and 2024. The underclass games for classes 20024 and 2025 are Aug. 11-14 at the same site.
Scouts from all 30 MLB teams and top NCAA coaches will be in attendance. The MLB Area Code Games starts a year-long interview process culminating with the MLB Draft next summer.
Johns said he received rave reviews from MLB scouts about Islanders Field, which now hosts some of the best and high-profile baseball events in the region.
