East Bay Firefighters Set Up Shop At Alameda County Fairgrounds

Cal Fire, which is leading the response to a slew of local fires, has established its base at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.

PLEASANTON, CA — Cal Fire has established a base camp at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, where local and state fire and government officials have gathered as firefighters attack wildfires scorching the East Bay.

At the fairgrounds, there are daily briefings, lodging, food and resources for crew members, said Brian Centoni, spokesperson for the Alameda County Fire Department. Firefighters from across the Bay Area are aiding in firefighting efforts.

Fires are burning across the state and in Contra Costa, Alameda and Santa Clara counties.

A series of fires near Brentwood known as the Deer Complex Fire tripled in size from Sunday morning to Monday morning at 1,161 acres, with homes threatened and evacuations ordered. There is no containment.

Another complex fire comprised of blazes near Sunol in Alameda and Santa Clara counties known as the Marsh Fire had burned about 1,775 acres as of noon Monday. There is no containment.

California is currently in the midst of a heatwave with the potential to set record-high temperatures. As the heat set in, heavy winds whipped and vegetation dried out, fires began sparking across the Bay Area and state.

There were 15 active fires as of noon Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a news conference.

The fairgrounds could not be immediately reached for comment.
