Under FATCA, a US law that requires foreign financial institutions to report US account holders’ tax information to the IRS or face severe penalties, over for failure to do so. Over 77,000 banks in nearly 70 countries, including Switzerland, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands - all favorite places for Americans to hide money - have agreed to comply by March 2015.
