The closest Kmart stores are in Hayward, San Leandro, Antioch and Concord. Nationwide, many of the stores were visited by "layaway angels" over the holidays, but now they may need the protection of an angel themselves.

On Tuesday afternoon, traffic was light at the Sears at Stoneridge Mall. However, two shoppers entering the store said they would be disappointed to see this particular store close.

A teenage boy from Pleasanton said he buys clothing and shoes at this Sears store, which is located close to his house. He said Sears has a wide range of items from electronics to appliances to clothes.

"When I come here, I can get everything," he said. "Who wants to drive all over the place when you can just come here."

A woman from Livermore also noted Sears variety of products, in particular its Kenmore appliances.

"I like Sears. They have good prices and a great selection that I like," she said.

However, the Livermore resident said she would not drive to Concord or San Leandro to shop at Sears if the Stoneridge store closed.

"That's too far to go," she said.
