UPDATE: Vegetation Fire Alongside I-680 Near Sunol Under Control

Smoke from the fire could be seen all over Tri-Valley. CHP officials have closed one northbound lane of the freeway.

A three-alarm fire along northbound Interstate Highway 680 between Sunol and Pleasanton is under control but fire crews remain on the scene, an Alameda County fire dispatcher said this afternoon. Fire officials were called to the blaze at 10:34 a.m., the dispatcher said.

The fire is located on the eastbound side of Interstate Highway 680 near Sunol, the dispatcher said. At about 11:10 a.m., helicopters were seen dropping water to help with fire suppression. Fire officials say firefighting planes were utilized.

Livermore Pleasanton Fire Battalion Chief Joe Testa said at least one structure started to burn but was extinguished.

California Highway Patrol officers are assisting with traffic control, according to the CHP website. The CHP has closed the right lane on northbound Highway 680 just north of Pleasanton Sunol Road because of the fire just east of the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The lane is estimated to reopen around 3 p.m.

Residents have reported heavy traffic on the freeway since the fire started.

Testa said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. No one was injured during the fire.
