First-Place Glads Keep Bringing Heat In Coast-North Baseball
Nick Mladinich slugs two Big Flies as host Chabot takes series over Skyline. Casey Cummings and Justin Durflinger also hit homers.
The strong efforts keep coming for the Chabot College baseball team, which entered this week with a three-game lead in the Coast-North Conference. The Glads (24-10-1, 11-4) top the conference in runs scored overall with 296 and runs scored in conference play with 110.
Chabot took two of three from Skyline last week and, impressively, has won every series in conference this season.
Hot-hitting Nick Mladinich, a San Ramon Valley High graduate and Danville HOOTS product, slugged two of the Glads’ four home runs in an 8-5 triumph over Skyline on Saturday, April 15 at Steve Friend Stadium. Casey Cummings and Justin Durflinger also went deep for Chabot. The Glads lead the state in home runs with 55 as a team. Brian DuRoff is No. 2 individually with 15 homers, and Cummings is third with 13.
Antoine Valerio got the win against Skyline on Saturday, going 6.1 innings, striking out nine and walking none. Durflinger and Mladinich both had three RBI. Alonzo Guijarro doubled.
In a 9-1 rout of Skyline on April 11, Sam Heyman (6-1, 1.60 ERA) pitched well over 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts and one walk. Valerio nailed it down with two shutout innings, striking out six and allowing no hits.
Cummings was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI from the leadoff spot. Mladinich, who had a big series, was 3 for 4 with three RBI. DuRoff, the state leader in RBI with 63, and Liam Forsyth doubled. Durflinger was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Dominic Charles scored twice and was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Chabot also sparkled on defense with no errors.
