Hart Middle Schoolers' Blanket Fundraiser Will Help Single Moms
"This project has brought us a lot of joy learning how we can help others in our community."

PLEASANTON, CA — Two middle school students in Pleasanton launched an online fundraiser to raise money to buy fabric so they could make blankets for single mothers. Riley Young and Ava Sotelo, seventh graders at Thomas Hart Middle School, said they created the fundraising campaign after their teacher assigned the classes a project called "Twenty Percent Time Project."
The students are given 20 percent of the week in the class to chip away on their projects. Riley said she and Ava have learned a lot and worked hard to complete the assignment, which they have worked on for several months. The girls said they buy the fleece fabric and make the blankets themselves. The finished blankets are donated to Single Moms Strong, an organization run by their mentor, Tara Taylor.
"This project has brought us a lot of joy learning how we can help others in our community," Riley told Patch. "We are trying to raise money to help the organization that helped us a lot."
