Host Las Positas Has Big First Day In Conference Swim
Hawks' men gain two individual titles and women notch a relay crown

Las Positas College men's and women's swimmers gave powerhouse efforts in the first day of the Coast Conference Championships at Las Positas.
The Hawks earned three conference titles on Thursday, two individually on the men's side and another in women's relays.
"As a whole, it was a great day," declared Hawks coach Jason Craighead. "We had a few conference champions, some potential State Qualifying times, lots of personal bests, and it really didn't rain that much."
Impressively, Las Positas' Ross Brown and Kyle Young went 1-2 in the men’s 500-yard freestyle finals, with winner Brown being timed in 4:50.59 and Young at 5:05.46.
Franco Moufarrej won the Coast title in the 50 free (21:27).
Zachary Perry was third in the 200 IM (2:00.23). The Hawks were second in both the men's 400 medley relay (3:38.26) and the 200 free relay (1:27.41).
Also in the 500 free finals, the Hawks’ Cade Venables (5:27.95) was fourth and Sean Mendez (5:28.37) fifth.
In women’s action, the Hawks’ 400 medley relay won the conference championship (4:21.98), with a team of Samantha Dorn (backstroke), Ashley Sand (breaststroke), Sarah Thompson (butterfly) and Gabrielle Benavidez (freestyle). The Hawks were a close second in the 200 free relay (1:43.46), behind West Valley (1:42.58).
Dorn, Thompson and Benavidez finished 2-3-4 in the women’ s 500-yard freestyle finals. Ashley Sand was third in the 200 IM (2:17.96), with a personal best of over 3 seconds, and Chabot’s Gillian Cano (2:17.34) was second.
The three-day meet continues with preliminaries at 10 a.m. on Friday and finals at 3 p.m., at Las Positas. Saturday's final day starts at 10 a.m. with preliminaries, and wraps up with finals at 3 p.m.
