Inaugural Run Pays Homage to Pleasanton Woman Fatally Shot at Pier 14 in San Francisco
The 'Good For The Soul' run will be held on October 30 in honor of the Amador Valley High graduate.

PLEASANTON, CA — A new run will pay homage to 32-year-old Kate Steinle, a former Pleasanton resident who was fatally shot while visiting San Francisco's Pier 14 with her father in July of 2015. The inaugural ‘Good For The Soul’ run will benefit two local nonprofit organizations.
“With this run, the organizers hope that people will come together to remember that life is short and tomorrow is not a guarantee,” race organizers said. “Proceeds from this run will be donated to the wonderful organizations Students Rising Above and the Challenged Athletes Foundation.”
Those who knew Steinle said she was the type of person that truly made the world a better place. Steinle was described by friends as “amazing, compassionate and energetic.” She grew up in Pleasanton and graduated from Amador Valley High.

“The morning Kate passed, she changed her Facebook cover photo to a picture with a quote that read ‘Whatever’s good for your soul… Do that!’ That is the way Kate lived. With this run we hope that people come together to remember Kate, to remember that life is short and tomorrow is not a guarantee. So love and live life to the fullest, just like Kate did.”

The run will take place on the streets of downtown Pleasanton.

“The 5K and 10K certified courses are flat and fast, using the monitored downtown streets of Pleasanton and a portion of the paved and un-paved Arroyo Trails,” officials said. “The start and finish lines are located under, or very close to the Pleasanton arch, located on Main Street. The Kids’ Challenge is a number of 100-yard dashes on Main Street, finishing right underneath the arch.”
Police arrested Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, who had been deported from the United States five times and had seven prior felony convictions, within an hour of the shooting. Police said the gun used in the shooting was allegedly stolen from the car of a Bureau of Land Management agent who had left it unsecured in a backpack. Steinle’s tragic death was one of several cases to inspire proposed California gun legislation in an attempt to safeguard federal service weapons from theft.
