Juanita Haugen Scholarship gives AV Student a pathway to success

This letter was received a few months ago.

To the Board, Donors, and Volunteers of the Community of Character Collaborative,

It's been two years since I walked the halls of Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, CA, and wow, a lot has happened! I'm just about to graduate from Las Positas College with my Associate's degree, and guess what? I’m graduating with honors! With the benefit of financial aid, I’ve been able to focus fully on school. Despite two learning disabilities, my grades have been really good (3.9 GPA at LPC and a concurrent 4.0 at Berkeley!), but more than that, I've gained new confidence. In learning to use my voice, I’ve been active as VP of Student Government and an ambassador with Presidential Scholars at LPC. I also speak to classes of middle and high school students about mental health and advocate for systemic change.

More than that, I have some exciting news that I couldn't wait to share with the organization that believed in me. I got accepted to my dream school- UC Berkeley! I still can't quite believe it, but I'm over the moon!

I want to thank you for awarding me the 2022 Juanita Haugen Community of Character scholarship. Financial assistance has been vital for my journey. Knowing that you believed in me when I was just starting to figure myself out made all the difference.

It’s been a couple of years, but the impact of your support and encouragement hasn't faded. Receiving the Juanita Haugen scholarship motivated me to aim high, work hard, and believe in myself—even when things seemed out of reach.

Thank you again for everything. You truly changed the trajectory of my life!

The Community of Character Scholarship honors the memory of Juanita Haugen, trustee and president of Pleasanton School Boards for 28 years.

Last year, due to the success of the BBQ/Fundraiser, we were able to increase the number of scholarships to eleven from five the prior year.

The BBQ Fundraiser will be in the amazing backyard of retired police captain Craig Eicher.

100% of the Tickets and Auction Items will go to the Scholarship Fund.

Cost of the Dinner is being donated by the Community of Character board.

Anyone wishing to help the scholarship fund is welcome to attend, it is a beautiful event.
