Las Positas Men's, Women's Basketball Report: Johnson, Cavness soar
Jordahn Johnson nails double-double in rout of Folsom Lake; Monique Cavness No. 2 in state rebounding

The Las Positas men’s basketball team, ranked No. 21 in the Dec. 19 California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) poll, routed visiting Folsom Lake 91-57 on Dec. 17 in nonconference play.
Sophomore forward Jordahn Johnson paced the Hawks (9-4) with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, to go with three blocks. Johnson, an All-State Team pick last season out of Weston Ranch High, is averaging a double-double with 19.4 points (No. 14 State) and 12.0 rebounds (No. 6 State) a game.
Jalen Patterson, averaging 17.5 ppg (No. 41 State), amassed 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and one block. He was tidy 5 of 5 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free throw line.
Nay’Veon Reed was solid off the bench with 13 points and five rebounds, and Brandon Fisher checked in with 10 points (5-6 from floor) as the Hawks shot 55 percent from the field.
Las Positas led by 23 points at halftime and cruised to victory.
The Hawks are home against Marin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, in their nonconference finale, before the biggie against CCSF at The Nest on Jan. 4 to open Coast-North play. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Las Positas forward Monique Cavness, a 5-foot-11 freshman out of El Cerrito High, had a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds in the “Coaches vs. Cancer” Pink Game against Los Medanos Dec. 19 at Tony Costello Court.
Cavness also had a huge double-double against visiting Mission on Dec. 15, with 26 points and 23 rebounds. The Hawks’ Karin Moore added 10 rebounds.
Cavness is ranked No. 2 in the state in average rebounds at 16.9 per game and is No. 30 in points, also averaging 16.9 a game.
Also against Los Medanos, the Hawks’ Ariana Madison had nine points and eight boards.
On Dec. 13, the Hawks had a strong first half against Monterey-Peninsula in a 65-41 defeat. Cavness was on her game with 24 points and 22 rebounds. Guard Mi’Ari Garnett contributed 15 points.
