SUNOL, CA — State Route 84, also known as Niles Canyon Road, will close in both directions from Palomares Road in Fremont to Main Street in Sunol from July 14-17, Caltrans announced.

The road will close from Friday, July 14 at 8 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., though unforeseen events like weather may postpone the closure. Over the winter, a stretch of 680 nearby was scheduled to be closed for roadwork, but rain caused several postponements.

During the closure, construction crews are working to connect the existing roadway with a new roadway leading to the new Alameda Creek Bridge, Caltrans said. This work includes grinding the pavement, laying down hot mix asphalt and rubberized asphalt paving, and striping the roadway.

When the road is paved and the striping is complete, the road will be opened to traffic alongside the new Alameda Creek Bridge.

Portable changeable message signs will be placed before the closure to keep drivers updated. Traffic will be directed to Route 238 and I-680. See here for more information and alternate routes.
