Pleasanton Police Uncover Stolen Catalytic Converters
Police say they found the converters in the trunk of a car that attempted to flee, but crashed into a curb instead.

PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton police officers recovered over 15 stolen catalytic converters, the Pleasanton Police Department said.
Last week, officers spotted a car with a stolen license plate and attempted to pull it over, according to a department report. The car sped away, but stopped after hitting a curb. Officers say they found over 15 catalytic converters during a search of the car.
The suspect, whose name was not given, was arrested and taken to Santa Rita Jail.

Catalytic converter theft claims have risen more than 1,000 percent since 2019, according to AAA data reported by the League of California Cities. California also accounts for almost one-third of all catalytic convert claims in the U.S. made to State Farm, according to the League.
Since Jan. 1, 2023, laws regulate who can sell and purchase the converters, require a traceable payment method for converter transactions, and include fines and penalties for anyone convicted of knowingly violating the new regulations.

To avoid theft, Allstate Insurance recommends:
- Etch a license plate number or VIN onto your converter.
- Park in well-lit or secured areas.
- Install an anti-theft device.
- Install motion-sensitive light and cameras.
- Make sure your auto insurance includes catalytic converter coverage.
