PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton city planning staff rejected a potential five-story building on Harrison Street, near the Pleasanton Public Library, Pleasanton Weekly reports.

The controversial project would have included a 48,000-square-foot building with 3,000 square feet of retail space, and 37 units of mostly lower-income housing. Local neighborhood groups like the Tri-Valley branch of United Neighbors in Livermore held petition drives in January in support of the statewide ballot initiative to amend the state constitution to allow local zoning and land-use ordinances to supersede state housing laws.

Community developer director Ellen Clark told the Weekly that the project did not qualify for ministerial approval because staff found it to be inconsistent with Housing Density Bonus provisions of state laws and local objective standards.
