Share the Gift of English: Become a Literacy Tutor at Pleasanton Library
New Volunteer Tutor Training Scheduled at Pleasanton Library on January 31

The Pleasanton Library’s Project Read literacy program is seeking volunteer tutors to assist adults with English skills. A new tutor training will be held in the large meeting room of the library on January 31, 2015, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Project Read students come to Pleasanton from all over the world, and most have basic English skills through the study of the language in their home country.
California has approximately 3.4 million adults with below basic literacy skills. Library volunteers across the state help adults with reading and writing so they can reach their potential as employees, parents, and community members. These adults are now becoming citizens, voting for the first time, reading newspapers, reading aloud to their children, participating in their community and securing jobs.
Project Read provides volunteer tutors with workbooks and study guides: you bring the energy and creativity! The library staff will assist volunteers in the development of teaching skills. As volunteers gain experience, they enrich their own resume, while helping others to learn a critical skill. Volunteer literacy tutors must be at least 18 years of age and fluent in American English, and able to devote a consistent hour or two weekly to a student for one semester.
