TRI-VALLEY, CA — Americans aren't the only ones wrestling with food insecurity. They're struggling to feed pets, too, according to Valley Humane Society.

The Pleasanton-based nonprofit said it has seen demand for its AniMeals pet food bank pr skyrocket and increase 400 percent since March. Valley Humane Society believes it will end up spending $15,000 more than usual to meet this year's demand.

The nonprofit has been distributing pet food several times per week, with partners Open Heart Kitchen and Alameda County Food Bank.

“Having a pet to lean on is more important than ever, with emotions and stress running high due to health and financial worries,” said Executive Director Melanie Sadek in a news release.

Valley Humane Society is asking for financial donations, as storage space is limited. Your dollar also goes further with a cash donation since the society purchases food wholesale, not from retailers, the nonprofit said.

Donations to the nonprofit are currently being matched.
