Camper was transferred to Valley Humane on 8/6 from Stockton Animal Services. He had been found stray. Camper weighs 9.83 pounds. Camper is a delightful little guy. He loves car rides and field trips. He is happy to greet other dogs and has done very well with cats in his foster home. Camper knows shake, high five, sit and down. Camper is a go-dog; he wants to get out and about! He would be a great companion for someone who travels and wants a canine pal to accompany them.
This dog has a heart murmur and has been diagnosed with heart disease. This dog has been diagnosed by a cardiologist (Dr. Waxman at SAGE Dublin center) for degenerative valve disease of both the mitral valve (severe) and tricuspid valve (mild to moderate) of his heart. This is a common age-related disease process in small breed dogs. This degeneration predisposes him to the development of clinical heart disease in the future, requiring veterinary treatment and multiple medications.
At the time of diagnosis (August 2020), one heart medication treatment has been recommended - Pimobendan. This medication has been initiated while this dog has been at VHS. While at VHS, no signs of heart disease (coughing, weight loss, exercise intolerance, weakness, fainting, labored breathing) have been observed. The adopting family needs to be aware that this type of heart disease can lead to congestive heart failure and unfortunately this dog is at a near active risk of congestive heart failure. The adopting family should have this dog’s heart monitored on a regular basis by their family veterinarian.
The cardiologist recommends a follow-up in 4 months, or sooner if problems arise. Please refer to this dog's echocardiogram results for further information and recommendations.
