Vaping, Tobacco Ban Sought For Pleasanton Schools, Community

A resolution would forbid the use of tobacco products and vaping devices on campuses and during any school-related activities.

PLEASANTON, CA — Just weeks after the Pleasanton Police Department announced it was getting tougher on the illegal sales of flavored tobacco and e-cigarettes to underage buyers, the Pleasanton Unified School District Board of Trustees will take up the issue in its upcoming meeting scheduled Aug. 27.

The board is likely to adopt a resolution — "Tobacco-Free and Vaping-Free Schools and Communities" — that calls on the entire Pleasanton community to support a halt in the marketing and sales of tobacco, flavored tobacco and vaping products to young people throughout the city.

The resolution also calls on the PUSD and its board of trustees and to take "all practical and necessary steps" to discourage students from smoking, including forbidding the use of tobacco products and vaping devices on campuses and during any school-related activities. It also calls for providing student education and family information on the dangers of tobacco and vaping use.

On Aug. 12 and 13, the Pleasanton Police Department targeted 29 businesses in the city that sell flavored tobacco and e-cigarettes. During the sting, plain-clothed officers accompanied underage decoys at the locations. Four businesses sold to the decoys; each was issued a citation, police said.

In June, The Livermore City Council unanimously voted to ban the sales of all flavored tobacco products and electronic delivery devices citywide, and it introduced a 1,000-foot buffer zone between tobacco retailers and sites like schools and libraries.
