'Wonderful, Dedicated, Loyal and Hardworking': Pleasanton Hero

PLEASANTON, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories. This submission comes from prolific community organizer Ken Mano, who nominated his friend and co-volunteer Diane Ferrari of Pleasanton.

What does the local hero do? Housewife / Volunteer

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

Diane Ferrari is like the Energizer Bunny, she keeps going, and going, and going. She recently organized a project for The Magic Yarn Project to make home spun whimsical wigs for little cancer patients, the project involved 300 volunteers. www.themagicyarnproject.com.

She is the coordinator for JustServe in the San Jose council for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and leads projects and assists in helping find community service projects from the East Bay to San Jose and Monterey. She has led youth groups in helping at food pantries to cemeteries.

Youth groups she has led include Cub and Boy Scouts collecting food for Scouting for Food, children’s groups in making cards and painted pumpkins for Senior Support. A blanket drive for Moms Against Poverty yielded hundreds of blankets to be given to needy children in the Bay Area.

Early this year, she led her Cub Scout Pack in the Tongan Relief Drive, collecting granola and protein bars, fruit cups, canned meat, face masks and medical supplies to be shipped to Tonga and Samoa.

She is in addition currently an advisor to the newly formed JustServe Club at Amador Valley High School. He husband Jason is completely supportive as he also gives much time to youth activities and supports Diane in her many community service activities. Note: I did not get her permission to submit her for the local hero award.
