13 Rescued Horses Ready for Adoption from County of San Diego

The horses seized from a Ramona property are now healthy and ready for new owners, officials said.

San Diego County, CA — Thirteen horses seized from a Ramona property because they weren't being fed or cared for properly are now healthy enough for adoption, the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services announced Friday.

The horses, available for adoption at the county's Bonita animal services facility, include three Belgians, five thoroughbreds, four Quarter Horses and one Quarter Horse/Arab mix.

The equines have been under veterinary care since they were seized from their owner in late May and early June, following an administrative hearing.

“All of these horses suffered from neglect and our staff has dedicated a lot of time, energy and hay to help the animals put on weight,” said Dawn Danielson, director of County Animal Services.

In addition to being underweight, many of the horses had severe hoof issues, county officials said.

Fifteen horses were rescued from the property but, according to officials, two of them were so severely malnourished and had such extensive medical issues that they were euthanized to alleviate their suffering.

Photographs of all the horses can be viewed on the county's animal adoptions webpage.

The adoption prices vary per horse; interested parties are encouraged to visit the Bonita shelter to view the horses and obtain the adoption prices. Located at 5821 Sweetwater Road, the shelter is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
