POWAY, CA — Poway runners looking to stay active after Thanksgiving can take on steep climbs, rocky trails and scenic mountain terrain when the Black Mountain Turkey Burner Trail Race returns Saturday, Nov. 28.
The annual event will take place at Black Mountain Community Park, 14700 Carmel Valley Road in Rancho Peñasquitos, offering residents an opportunity to participate in one of the Endurance Race Series' most challenging trail races.
This year's event will feature three distances — a 5K, 10K and new half marathon — along with a kids dash for younger runners.
Organizers describe the Black Mountain course as the most technical race in the Endurance Race Series Sunshine Series, featuring steep climbs, rocky sections and stretches of dirt trails. The new half marathon will add extended climbing toward the mountain's summit area.
The race is also an Endurance Race Series Championship qualifier, giving competitive runners an opportunity to earn points toward the series standings.
Race-day registration and check-in will open at 6:30 a.m. The half marathon begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 10K at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K at 8:15 a.m. The kids dash is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
Participation is limited to 300 runners, and advance registration is encouraged.
Current entry fees are listed at $62.97 for the 5K, $79.02 for the 10K and $111.12 for the half marathon. Prices are subject to change, and participants should check the organizer's website for the latest availability.
Poway residents planning to attend should also prepare for limited parking at Black Mountain Community Park. Organizers encourage carpooling, with additional parking available about a half-mile away off Black Mountain Road.
Those who prefer to participate without racing can volunteer to help with registration, staff aid stations or serve as course marshals. Volunteers may receive a complimentary entry to another Endurance Race Series event, subject to organizer requirements.
The race is scheduled for the Saturday following Thanksgiving, offering local runners and families a way to spend the holiday weekend outdoors.
