Let's Talk Sex: POWPAC to Feature 'Body Awareness'

The community theater will hold a stage reading of the comedic play.

It's time to bring a little humor to a serious subject—sex.

will hold a stage reading of the dramatic comedy Body Awareness on Sunday.

Starring Kaly McKenna, Michael Fuller, Kate Hewitt and Jim Caputo, the play makes light of the tensions that arise when college professor Phyllis and her partner, Joyce, host a visiting artist—nude photographer Frank—in their home during "Body Awareness" week on campus. Frank's body of work prompts conflicting feelings of identity and sexuality that bring a touching and funny view to self-awareness.

"It's a play that discusses serious topics but not in a heavy-handed, preachy kind-of-way," said director and producer Debbie David. "It's very comedic. It's a wonderful piece and you get to really delve into these characters."

But the story tells more than just the relationship of Phyllis, Joyce and Frank—the play also incorporates Joyce's adult son, who may have Asperger's Syndrome, and his struggle to express himself physically.

"It brings up different issues of our identity," David said. "It's striving to have a normal life but can't really define what normal is. It proves that it's easier to judge others than judge ourselves."
