Boys Lacrosse: RB Nips Poway in Palomar Showdown
The Broncos and Titans both are looking to make a deep run toward a championship; RB also wins the girls' game with a big comeback.
Heading into Friday night's game against Rancho Bernardo, the Poway boys lacrosse team boasted an undefeated record, was ranked in the top 10 in the nation by LAXPower.com and had never lost to Rancho Bernardo in RB.
The Titans were averaging more than 13 goals per game and were giving up fewer than three scores every time they hit the field, and did I mention that they had never lost to the Broncos in RB?
All that changed as Rancho Bernardo (9-2, 4-0) defeated Poway 9-7 for just their second victory all-time over the Titans (7-1, 3-1).

“We came in prepared and with a chip on our shoulder having never beaten them at home,” said Broncos first-year coach Travis Begay. “It definitely feels good to finally get the monkey off our backs.”
The Broncos gave up an early goal to Poway, but bounced back quickly with a hat trick from Justin Adams and some stellar work in the net by goalie Zach Weaver, who held Poway well below its scoring average.

“This put a spark in us that we can take into the rest of the season,” said Adams. “We have the energy and the team chemistry, and I think this is our year to go all the way. We want the CIF championship.”
If the Broncos do win it all, it would be their first CIF title in lacrosse, but they still have a long road ahead of them. They will have to face a motivated Poway team at least once more before the season is over.
“No one wins a championship in April,” said Titans coach Paul Sanit. “We want to be playing our best lacrosse in the playoffs. There’s no doubt that we will be better after this game.”
After the game, it was obvious that Poway was disappointed with the loss, but the Titans quickly shrugged it off, knowing they’ll get their chance at redemption.
“We’ll see them again,” said Titans’ midfielder Matt Landon, who led Poway in scoring with three goals. “A loss is a loss. We’ll learn, we’ll grow, but nothing really matters until May. We know we belong at the top.”
In the girls' lacrosse showdown in Poway, the Titans (6-5, 5-1) took a 3-0 lead but ended up falling to Rancho Bernardo 6-5. Allison Proehl and Blaiz Major each had three goals for the Broncos (11-1, 6-0).
