Community Forum on Identity Theft Set for May 7

Learn how to protect yourself from identity theft at this Poway event.

About 2,000 Poway residents will suffer from some form of identity theft in 2015, according to national statistics on this growing crime. Learn how you can lower your risk of being one of these victims at a special community forum at 7 pm May 7, 14211 Twin Peaks Road.

Presented as a public service by the Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC), it will feature Matt Davis, of the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center in San Diego, who will educate homeowners on best practices for fraud and identity theft detection, reduction and mitigation.

“There are so many cases of victims suddenly discovering they owe thousands of dollars for things they never bought and even if the criminal is caught, they are pursued for years by creditors,” said Terri Sorensen, PNEC president. “It’s not just credit card theft but crimes they commit using someone else’s identity that puts innocent people behind bars.”
