Students Make a Splash With Water Conservation Poster Contest

Alex Osicka and Anna and Ellie Feng of Creekside Elementary drew three of 19 winning posters to be featured in the city of San Diego's 2013 Water Conservation Poster Calendar.

Oh, how time flies—but that’s a good thing for Alex Osicka and Anna and Ellie Feng of Creekside Elementary, whose artwork just won them a place the 2013 Water Conservation Poster Calendar for San Diego’s Public Utilities Department.

In its 12th year now, the Children’s Water Conservation Poster contest is meant to provide a forum for teachers and students to talk about ways they can make every drop of water count. Students are then encouraged to translate what they’ve learned into art.

This year’s theme was San Diegans Waste No Water and, according to the city’s website, students were asked to “use large lettering, few words, heavy lines and strong colors.”

“I really admire the effort the students put into the posters and the message,” said San Diego Councilwoman Sherri Lighter, who has been instrumental in promoting water conservation awareness throughout San Diego.

She continued: “They are all extremely talented, and I hope they continue their great work in spreading the word about water conservation and sustainability in San Diego.”

A total of 19 drawings were chosen from students all over San Diego County, with three winners from each grade level. Osicka and Anna Feng, both first graders, placed first and third place respectively. Ellie Feng, a fourth grader, won first place for her grade.

The posters will be on display from June 1 to 30 at the San Diego Watercolor Society Gallery in Point Loma’s Liberty Station, and from June 8 to July 4 at the San Diego County Fair’s Creative Youth Exhibit.
