Driver Arrested Trying to Avoid Poway DUI Checkpoint
Two deputies suffered minor injuries while arresting Bren Leroux, who tried to avoid a DUI checkpoint over the weekend in Poway.

POWAY, CA – Two deputies suffered minor injuries while arresting a driver who tried to avoid a DUI checkpoint over the weekend in Poway.
The sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint took place from 9 p.m. Saturday to 2:10 a.m. Sunday on Twin Peaks Road in Poway.
A total of 1,223 drivers passed through the checkpoint, including Bren Leroux. After deputies determined that Leroux was driving under the influence, he took off running before they could arrest him. Deputies were able to apprehend Leroux after a short chase on foot.

Leroux was uninjured, but two deputies received minor scrapes and were treated at the scene by Poway Paramedics. Leroux was arrested and booked into jail for DUI and resisting arrest.
Of the vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 654 vehicles were stopped. Leroux was the only driver cited for DUI. Two drivers were cited for driving without a license, while another driver was cited for driving with a suspended license and another for driving with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. Through the checkpoint police aimed to educate the public of the dangers associated with drinking and driving.
