PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre announces the premiere of a new, one-act play, Memories of Gettysburg, the story of Miss Hattie Elizabeth Turner, a witness to the Battle of Gettysburg during that fateful summer of 1863. There will be one performance only at 7 pm, Sunday, April 22, followed by a talk back with author, Annette Hubbell. Ms. Hubbell, who also appears in the role of Miss Hattie, will be wearing an authentic 1860s costume, complete with bonnet and hoop skirt designed by Ginger Alberti. If you are a history buff, or just interested in a good story, this is a performance not to be missed.
Miss Hattie tells of the Battle and its aftermath, weaving stories of individual bravery and courage throughout her account. “Any nation is nigh unto destruction if it can forget or walk thoughtlessly across its battlegrounds,” she says. At Gettysburg, thousands of soldiers converged on the field of battle, fought bravely, and just as suddenly withdrew, leaving behind 30,000 casualties. Inspired by a true character, Ms. Hubbell, a resident of Poway, attempts to answer the question of what a small town does when faced with a calamity of this magnitude.
Annette Hubbell recently made her acting debut on the PowPAC stage in the role of Eleanor Roosevelt in Tea with Mrs. Roosevelt. She has presented Memories of Gettysburg to student and adult forums around the county, where it has garnered rave reviews. “A riveting performance!”
