Get Back in the Game with Sports Medicine at Arch Health Partners

Sports medicine treats and rehabilitates the musculoskeletal injuries athletes experience from improper form or a sports-related accident. Another common cause is overuse, or overtraining which presents with some more subtle or seemingly unrelated symptoms. Many athletes occasionally experience a lull in performance, but if you’ve experienced an extended period of performance plateau or decrease, combined with excessive muscle soreness, overtraining could be the cause. While it is good practice to expand your physical limits and set fitness goals, overtraining occurs when an athlete pushes these limits too hard, and the body does not have time to adjust and recover in between workouts. In addition to negatively impacting your overall peak performance levels, overtraining can cause injury to your joints, tissues and bones. If you currently experience any of the following symptoms, you could be overtraining: Amenorrhea (missed periods), constant fatigue, decreased strength and endurance, mood swings, increased occurrence of injury and illness, insomnia or persistent muscle soreness. Our physician specialists have experience working with athletes to treat and prevent injury during intense exercise. If you believe overtraining could be affecting your physical performance, talk with one of our orthopedic specialists to discuss how to safely increase your training routine without injury.
