POWAY, CA – With a heat wave hitting San Diego County, the city of Poway has closed trails at Iron Mountain and the Mt. Woodson trail on the east side Lake Poway. Signs will be posted to advise hikers that the trails are closed, according to the city.
City officials said trails are closed for the safety of hikers and rescue personnel when temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 100 degrees and a heat advisory is in effect.
As temperatures soar, so does the number of heat-related incidents. In the past year, the Poway Fire Department has responded to 37 calls regarding hikers in distress around Iron Mountain and Lake Poway, including Blue Sky and Mt. Woodson, according to the city.
