Little Artists Teaches Poway’s Budding Artists

This week is all about student arts. Help your aspiring artists to summon their inner Picasso at Little Artists, or encourage your child's performing artis teacher to nominate them as a Student Performer of the Month.

A local group is helping Poway children summon their inner Picasso.  is offering drawing and painting classes for kids ages 4 to teen. The ongoing monthly workshops are designed to teach the basics, creating an individualized program according to the age and experience of the little artist.

Students begin with drawing and progress to painting. When the student has a good understanding of the basic drawing skills and techniques, they will then progress to watercolors, acrylics, followed by oils.

“Most children begin drawing from pictures that are broken down into simple steps,” said Steve Symington, director and head teacher. “This prepares them for more challenging subject matter such as a photograph or still life.”

Committed to keeping the arts alive in Poway, the (POW!) Foundation has created a Student Performer of the Month Program, an opportunity to recognize student performers of exceptional talent.

The program is presented as part of POW!’s Arts in Education Initiative, recognizing three students or student groups from the elementary, middle and high school levels, each month. Students
and student groups can be from any of the performing arts disciplines: dance, music, art, theater and more. The program did a soft launch back in January 2011, acknowledging a handful of students, but this school year, the program will ramp up efforts. Submissions will then be accepted on an ongoing basis, beginning in September.

“Last year, students were brought in to enjoy the final performance and were honored from the stage,” said Yvonne Dows, marketing and development manager for POW! “It’s a great collaboration between Poway Unified, POW! and students.”

Submissions, selected by the Arts in Education Committee, must come from a performing arts teacher in the Poway Unified School District—theater, dance, music, art, or other performing art—or an elementary teacher. By having the nominations come from the teachers, this program honors the “cream of the crop,” said Dows.

Submissions should include: a photo and brief description of the student, including any awards or recognitions won, noteworthy performances, and future plans. Additionally, nominations should
include the student’s skill level, audio/video links or CD/DVD, if applicable. And, the proposals should include a signature from a parent for each child.

Student Performers of the Month will be featured in a special section of the POW! Website, in media releases, email blasts, and in playbills for upcoming performances at POW! The winning students and family will also be invited to an upcoming show at the Poway Center where they will be acknowledged from the stage.

Submissions must be sent via email or mailed to POW Student Performer, 15498 Espola Rd., Poway, CA 92064. For additional information, contact Yvonne Dows.

This is the final weekend of Wonder of The World, which is a modern comedy playing at the PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, now through Sunday. This is the first show of the theatre’s 31st season. Performance times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The story is about a dirty little secret that “Cass” discovers in her husband’s sweater drawer. It is so shocking that she feels she has no choice but to flee to the honeymoon capital of the world—aka Niagara Falls—in a desperate search for the life she thinks she missed out on. Directed by Raylene J. Wall and produced by Debbie David, this show promises to be funny with wicked whimsy and playfulness as “Cass” goes on a hysterical journey of self-discovery.

Tickets are $18 for general admission and $15 for seniors, students and active duty military. Reservations can be made through the Box Office or by calling 858-679 8085.
