From Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, household waste to America's landfills increases by an additional one million tons each week. Roughly 80 percent of what is discarded during the holidays could be recycled or reused. Here are our top recycling tips to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible:

Recyclable

  • Wrapping paper (including tissue paper). Place loosely in your recycling cart, do not bag.
  • Gift boxes.
  • Cardboard.
  • Paper gift bags (remove strings).
  • Holiday cards and envelopes.
  • Catalogs, newspaper, and junk mail.

Not Recyclable

  • Ribbons and bows.
  • Plastic gift bags.
  • Bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts.
  • Puffy mailing envelopes.
  • Used paper plates and cups.
  • Napkins and paper towels.
  • Christmas lights or electronics (Residents can take Christmas lights and electronics to the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off location. These items should not be placed in trash carts).
