POWAY, CA — A woman was struck and seriously injured Wednesday while standing in the parking lot of the Poway DMV when a driver accidentally hit her gas pedal with her foot instead of her brake pedal, authorities said.

San Diego County sheriff's traffic accident investigators responded to DMV just before 1:40 p.m., where they learned that the driver, a 67-year-old Poway woman, was backing her vehicle into the parking lot prior to hitting the gas pedal, according to sheriff's Sgt. David Cheever.

"The vehicle backed up very quickly and sideswiped an occupied parked vehicle in the parking lot and then struck a 39-year-old woman who was standing in the parking lot," Cheever said.

The victim was pushed into a parked pickup truck and her legs were pinched between the two vehicles, Cheever said.
