It has come to my attention that there isn’t a consistent blog about golf here at the Ramona Patch. Being a new-comer to Ramona, and also being a PGA golf professional, I would like to remedy this situation. In the coming weeks we can discuss golf equipment, golf instruction, even the importance of the space between the ears (ask Tiger about that…). We can talk about great golf vacations, great golf courses, including the big three (San Vicente GC, Mt. Woodson GC, & Barona GC) here in the wonderful area of Ramona. If you have questions on your golf swing, ask it in the comment section and I will do my best to give some advice.
I hope you all had the opportunity to watch the Masters tournament a couple of weeks ago. As an instructor knowing how difficult this game is to play it absolutely astounds me that a player could win this event having never taken a golf lesson or even seen his swing on video. But that is exactly what Gerry “Bubba” Watson did. I don’t know if it is just coincidence but doesn’t it seem to you that both lefthanders, Phil Mickelson and Bubba, both play the same “go for it” style of golf? Not since I watched Arnold Palmer, albeit mostly on old recordings, have I seen this type of exciting play. It is fun to watch the bold play and remarkable imagination (final 7-iron, 40 yard hook shot by Bubba) needed to pull this victory out of the hat. We all remember the shot Phil struck off the pine needles on 13 the final day to win one of his green jackets. Being a golf instructor myself I wouldn’t give this advice very often but if Bubba came to me I would tell him don’t take a lesson and don’t watch yourself on video. His natural imagination is what makes him great. And hitting the ball a country mile doesn’t hurt either!
Anyway, I would like to end this golf blog with a great bit congrats to Bubba. His emotional happiness at winning the Masters was understandable. Remember the PGA Championship in 2010 when Bubba lost a 3 hole playoff to Martin Kaymer by one shot. Bubba handled that tough loss as a gentleman and good sport. This year’s Masters was his turn to celebrate.
