CoRE Band in OPMS
A new group of 8th-graders form the CoRE band in Ramona. Practice started a month ago. Performance and school visits fill the calendar. They improve music techniques while building friendship.

This is the second year that Ramonaβs 11 highly motivated eighth-graders form an elite band called Community Outreach Ensemble (CoRE ) at the Olive Peirce Middle School (OPMS).
After two weeks of intense practice before the school started, the band played at five of the six Ramona Elementary schools to promote music in the first week of September. Now, the CoRE bandβs calendar is filled with visits to other middle schools, joint concerts with different school bands in Ramona, joint band practice with college students, and the final Holiday concerts in OPMS.
They will visit San Elijo Hills Middle School on Sept. 27.

These high performers enjoy being part of CoRE for the reward. They play more challenging and fun music, and they can perform in any event that requires some music to entertain the school children. They practice hard, so they can be the star of different events.
It has been said that they touched people with their music. Some seventh-graders are even jealous of the CoRE band being the star in every activity, but the seventh-graders will have their turn next year.

The CoRE members feel good emotionally about the band. Perhaps the extra practices bring them closer together. They travel together and perform together, so they feel like a family now. They can be themselves when together. Some players feel the jitters just before the performance, and some feel relaxed. They trust each other and enjoy the performances while improving their music techniques.Β Everyone in the group is different, and these children are experiencing a special part of their life with friends. Friendship and learning are all good in the CoRE band.
