This Sunday we are continuing our brand new preaching series through the Gospel According to Mark.
Our text will be Mark 1:12-13, which tells us about the temptation of Jesus Christ by Satan out in the wilderness. In the previous passage (v.9-11) Jesus was just baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, and saw the heavens being “torn open” (v.10, ESV), the Spirit descending upon Him as a dove (v.10), and heard a voice from heaven, saying, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (v.11).
Sounds good, right? But then the very next thing we read is that the same Holy Spirit who descended upon Jesus to anoint Him as God’s Messiah (or “anointed one”), and to equip Him to fulfill the work of our salvation, now ’drives’ Jesus out into the wilderness, where He is to be tempted by Satan.
Why did Jesus need to be tempted? Why did the Spirit drive Him to the place of temptation? And how does His undergoing such severe temptation (yet without sin!) help His people? Come find out the answers to those questions and more this Sunday!
We meet on Sundays @ 9:30 AM at 434 Aqua Lane (across from the Ramona Fairgrounds).
