Honorary Mayor's Race To Begin With Concert

The Honorary Mayor's contest will kick off with a concert on Feb. 26. Nominations for candidates will be announced. Another fundraiser will accept sponsorships for drywall sheets to raise money for the restoration of the hall's west wing.

Time to think about who you would like for the town's honorary mayor. The Town Hall Brass Band, under the direction of Ken Serfass, will help start the Honorary Mayor’s Contest with a concert Feb. 26 at the Performing Arts Wing.

The contest is a major fundraiser for Ramona Town Hall’s ongoing restoration and  expenses. Mayoral candidates are nominated for a $1 fee and then they raise votes at the same rate. The candidate raising the most money wins the honorary title and remains in office for two years, serving as a goodwill ambassador for the Town Hall.

The Mayor’s Concert is a joint event by Ramona Town Hall Board of Directors and Ramona Concert Association. It will begin at 7 p.m.. Admission will be $5. The Ramona High School orchestra also will play during the concert.

Sharon Davis, the current honorary mayor, is spearheading the start of a Friends of Ramona Tall Hall organization with annual memberships set at various levels. The group will also serve to solicit more volunteers to help with Town Hall events. Davis said she has a list now of about 100 people willing to donate their time.

The Town Hall board will “sell” drywall sheets when the restoration work begins on the west wing. People can donate money for a sheet and have their names placed on it before the sheets are installed on the walls of the room. The fundraiser will help cover the costs of the restoration work.

Prior to its regular monthly meeting on Feb. 16, the board conducted its annual meeting. Officers were re-elected for this year. Woody Kirkman will remain as president, with Bob Krysak as vice president and Sandee Salvatore as secretary/treasurer. Other board members are Darrell Beck and Bob Hailey.

Kirkman reported on events and fundraisers from the past year.

“We brought back the tradition of having a haunted house after an absence of about 25 years,” he said. “It will be back this year.”

Another fundraiser was the Ramona Has Talent show in September, which also served as a tribute to 9-11 survivors. The group plans to host another talent show in September.

“The talent show was very successful,” Kirkman said.

Director Beck announced there is a move by to bring back the rodeo parade in May. If it occurs, Beck said there will be a request to set up an announcer’s booth at the entryway to the Town Hall.
