40-Year-Old Rancho Bernardo Man Dies in I-8 Crash

The man crashed into the back of a parked tractor-trailer, officials said.

Authorities today identified a 40-year-old man who was killed when he slammed his pickup into a parked tractor-trailer in Descanso.

Gabriel A. Edwards of Rancho Bernardo suffered fatal injuries in a wreck on the Japatul Valley Road offramp of westbound Interstate 8 around 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

He died at the scene, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the 40-year-old driver of a 2002 Nissan Frontier was driving westbound on the shoulder of I-8 when he crashed into the back of a 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was parked on the shoulder of the freeway with its lights on.

The person in the freightliner, a 36-year-old man from Monrovia, was seated in the sleeper berth when the crash happened, according to the CHP. There did not appear to be any indication that the driver of the Frontier braked or tried to swerve away from the trailer, according to the CHP.

The Monrovia man was not injured.

According to the Medical Examiner's office, Edwards, who died in the crash, lived in an apartment in RB with his son.
