93-Year-Old PQ Golfer Wows With His Fitness

"Big Al" hits the course multiple times each week.

At 93, Rancho Peñasquitos resident "Big Al" Goycoochea is still going strong with his golf game, surprising many with his physical ability to endure the toils of local courses.

According to U-T San Diego, the golfer took on the so-called Cardiac Hill at the Balboa Park Golf Course without much trouble:

This wouldn’t be remarkable for a fit 30-year-old, but Goycoochea is more than triple that. He is 93, will be 94 in July. He walks -- never rides -- the Balboa course every Friday and the North Course at Torrey Pines every Monday. That is more than eight hours of exercise over more than 12,000 yards, or nearly seven miles, of terrain, not including the distance between tee boxes.

“We call him ‘Big Al,’ because that’s what he is -- bigger than life,” said Maran Doggett, who happened to land in a foursome at Balboa with Goycoochea in 1995 and was so inspired by him that they’ve been playing together ever since.
