Abraxas High Named 2011 Model Continuation High School

Abraxas was one of 27 continuation schools in California to receive the honor.

Abraxas High School in Poway, which also serves Rancho Bernardo students, has been named a 2011 Model Continuation High School, it was announced Friday.

Earlier this week, Abraxas High to more than 40 students during a mid-year graduation ceremony.

"These schools create a culture of learning for and provide educational continuity for students whose lives have been challenged," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell said in a statement.

"These Model Continuation High Schools have programs worth emulating. They help young people realize that getting a good education and earning a high school diploma is their chance toward leading a better and more prosperous life," O'Connell said.

Four San Diego County continuation schools, including Abraxas, were among the 27 to receive the honor from the California Department of Education and the California Continuation Education Association. Thirty-five schools applied.

There are more than 500 continuation schools serving nearly 70,000 students in California. The schools target students who are at least 16 years old and deficient in academic credits.

Abraxas will hold the model school title for three years. Rudy Casciato is the school's principal.

Other San Diego County continuation schools honored:

  • Palomar High School in Chula Vista.
  • Twin Oaks High School in San Marcos.
  • Valley High School in Escondido.
