Boys Soccer: RB Makes Final, Poway Upset by TP

Broncos win in shootout over San Pasqual, but the Titans fall to Torrey Pines 5-3.

The anticipated showdown between the highly regarded Rancho Bernardo and Poway boys soccer teams in Saturday's CIF San Diego Section Division I championship match won't come off.

Rancho Bernardo did its part Tuesday night, winning on penalty kicks 4-2 over San Pasqual after the schools battled to a scoreless tie. But top-ranked Poway lost a high-scoring duel with Torrey Pines, 5-3, only its second loss of the season.

The second-seeded Broncos (15-5-2) received shootout goals from Alex Brunsell, Reed McKenna, Brian Brennan and Dallin Cutler, while goalkeeper Jake Fenlason kept San Pasqual off the board for 95 minutes to force the penalty kick shootout.

Torrey Pines broke out of a 2-2 halftime tie with Poway (24-2-3) with three second-half scores. The Falcons (13-7-5), who had lost twice by 2-1 scores to the Titans in league play, now will face Rancho Bernardo in the section finals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westview High.

Ben Faller and Eric Budniewski scored the Titans' first-half goals, and Evan Myers added one in the second half, but it wasn't enough to get past the fourth-seeded Falcons.
