Groceries For Le$$: The “Miser of Moolah” says, “Now I’ve Seen Everything!” 8/31/11

Why pay more for food? Read and Save Every Week!

In our modern society replete with it’s lifestyle of fast food, disposable everything, minimal attention spans and living life at full speed, this signage (photo at right) appears to demonstrate the epitome of our inability to stop to smell the roses.  I incredulously clicked this photo at the North County Fair Mall.  Are we all that busy?  Has the day really come to pass when we need an elevator that also serves as a toilet?  Or are the two destinations simply in the same direction?   I leave that determination to you, my esteemed reader.

Did you know? - If you are shopping with kids at Stater Brothers, take them to the bakery department where the counterperson will gladly give your child a FREE cookie to keep them quiet for the first 30 seconds of your shopping excursion.

New additions to the column will include CVS and Rite Aid when and if they have something worth telling you about.  Which reminds me - I once knew someone who out of sheer convenience and speed did his grocery shopping at 7-Eleven. Was it a coincidence that he also happened to weigh about 350lbs (rhetorical question)?  Don’t worry, He will not be offended.  He will not choke on his dinner consisting of a Diet Pepsi Big Gulp and a Slim Jim.  The subject matter of this column would not interest him nor would he take the time to read it.  I’m safe.

Now that school is back in session for most of us in the SD, the task of finding new and interesting things to pack for snacks begins.  So, besides the cutsie bag of peeled baby carrots which gets dumped in the trash (and effectively making your child persona non-grata in the snack trading world), what else can we put in there bags that they’ll actually eat?  Both simple and saves you muchos pesos!  Check out 99¢ Only Stores.

  1. Little Debbie Wanabe? - Mrs. Freshley’s snack cakes, donuts and cookies.  With six to eight individually packaged snacks per box  (approx. 15¢ per snack)
  2. Bag Your Own - Buy a 50 pack of Brawny re-closeable zipper sandwich bags for 99¢ and fill them with your child’s favorite chip, cookie, gummy or pretzel.  Pay less than half the cost of a pre-packaged individual serving.
