Letter to the Editor: Water Authority extends discounts to North County farmers

After getting a two-year extension on an agricultural water discount program, North County farmers and the water agencies that supply them must now make the most of their reprieve.

Dear Editor:

I supported the request for a two-year extension of the agricultural water discount program to help North County farmers survive in an expensive, every-changing market.

Farming is an integral part of San Diego County's landscape, and consistently in the top-three revenue producers for the region. County farmers deal with a myriad of issues, including urban impacts to their operations, foreign competition that often plays by different, less-stringent rules in their home country, and expensive water rates.

This little boost is not the cure-all. It is a fee cut. But perhaps coupled with more attention to what the farmers need to survive, such as an uninterrupted flow of cheaper water, we can better support one of the key components of our San Diego County economy.

Sincerely,

DAVE ROBERTS
Deputy Mayor,
City of Solana Beach
