CIF Baseball: Top-Seeded RB Routs Carlsbad 14-0

Poway upsets No. 4 Vista to set up another meeting with the Broncos in the Div. I second round.

Andrew Daniel had a triple, home run and five runs batted in and starter David Gabel allowed just two hits over six innings Wednesday as top-seeded Rancho Bernardo blanked Carlsbad 14-0 in an opening round game of the section Division I baseball playoffs.

Max Homick added a home run and four RBIs as the host Broncos (24-6) scored four runs in the third and eight in the sixth to advance to Friday's second round, where they will host Palomar League rival Poway at 3:30 p.m.

Poway (23-8), which needed to win a play-in game as the No. 5 seed, upset No. 4 Vista behind the pitching of Chad Etchison, who tossed a five-hitter  and struck out six in improving his record to 7-0. Derek Hasenbeck's two-run double keyed a four-run seventh inning for the Titans that broke open what had been a 1-0 game.
