Councilman Carl DeMaio was endorsed in his mayoral bid Monday by a group of military veterans.

City Councilman Carl DeMaio was endorsed Monday in his San Diego mayoral bid by a group of six military veterans.
"With a narrowed field, I am pleased to announce that as the general election approaches, veterans of all branches and walks of life are rallying around Carl DeMaio," said retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Dennis Kenneally, volunteer coordinator of the Veterans for DeMaio Coalition.
Former Marine Capt. Sandy Purdon said DeMaio was very attuned to the veteran community.

"Last year, Carl supported the change to the San Diego City Charter which increased employment opportunities for veterans," Purdon said. "Previously only drafted members of the military had preferential treatment, now it includes all members of the military. I'm pleased to back his campaign for mayor."
DeMaio said at a news conference near the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park that if elected, he would create a Military and Veterans Advisory Board to advise on issues important to the military community.

"I am honored to receive the endorsements from America's heroes -- our veterans. I will continue to strive to offer more opportunities of our returning military men and women," DeMaio said.
