DeMaio Says Senior Center Will Stay Open

The center had been reported to be on the verge of closure.

San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio announced Monday that the Ed Brown Center will remain open for at least another year amid concerns that it would be forced to shut down in the next several weeks.

The Park and Recreation Department gave DeMaio's office a verbal commitment to give the center a one-year extension on its lease, according to a statement from the office of the councilman, who represents Rancho Bernardo in District 5.

"The Senior Center is a vital asset to residents and the senior community in Rancho Bernardo and this one-year extension will give them time to find ways to keep the center open permanently," DeMaio said in the statement.

Pomerado News had reported last week that the center was on the verge of closure because it was generating revenue from programming beyond its use parameters for seniors. Without the disallowed programming, the center wouldn't be able to sustain itself.

Now, the center will have at least a year to figure out a longterm model for sustainability.

"The Park and Recreation Department is working closely with the group and community to make sure senior services are not cut," Park and Recreation Department Director Stacey LoMedico said in the statement.

DeMaio said his office will work with center staff to find a permanent solution.
