DUI Checkpoint Set for Friday Night

The San Diego Police Department will be looking for drivers under the influence.

The San Diego Police Department will be on the lookout for drunken drivers Friday night.

Between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., the department's traffic unit will conduct a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city. Officers usually target areas where drivers are likely to be under the influence, such as near popular dining and entertainment locations. The checkpoints are conducted periodically through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Officers also step up patrols over holidays, such as last weekend's Fourth of July celebrations. California Highway Patrol officers in San Diego, and more than 1,500 statewide on suspicion of DUI over the three-day weekend.
